This is something a little different. A member of the community who wants to remain anonymous has donated a vintage #7 Stanley / Bailey Jointer Plane for the auctions. The plane is in excellent condition, it is very old (he thinks it is around 1910, but isn't sure, and I don't know enough about old tools to say one way or the other). The Jappaning is in pretty good shape and the bottoms have no pits or rust. The blade is in good shape and it is a Stanley blade from Austrailia (the plane is from England). The handles have been replaced somewhere along the way with plastic versions. (Personally I would buy a wood set from Ebay, but these are in perfectly good condition. No problems at all). The plane could use a good tuning and set up. There is a very slight hollow across the sole but nothing that can't be easily cleaned up with a good tuning. I have a very similar version of this for jointing plates and I spent about an afternoon thoroughly tuning it and getting it in tip top shape. Now it is a dream. In a couple of passes I have a perfect joint. If you are unfamiliar with tuning a hand plane, this is one approach. http://www.yesterdaystools.com/tuninga1.htm Vintage tools are very very nice. A brand new Lie Nielsen jointer plane is north of $400, so by that comparison this is sure to be a bargain. Good luck. The auction ends at Noon on Thursday in the normal way. ![]() ![]() ![]() (sorry about the quality of the pics. I struggle with my digital camera) |

That is probably a very nice plane, but I'm pretty sure it is much newer than 1910. I don't know when they started making them in England, but the "x ribs" on the casing look like some 1950's Stanleys I have seen. I think the kidney shaped hole on the lever cap started in 1930's. Anyways, a lot more (and I do mean a LOT) info about this on everybody's favorite vintage Stanley site: Blood & gore |

I knew somebody would chime in with more info on this. I know absolutely NOTHING about the collectibility of tools. I use them, that is it. I am just going off the info I was given. ![]() ![]() However... I am pretty sure that this might be put together from various planes. Again the blade is Austrailian, the body is English, and I don't know about the lever cap etc. I would buy this plane to make guitars with, not as an investment. ... something else worth noting...those white specs all over the base of the plane are specs of packing material. Not paint or chips. It is in very good shape. |
Andy it is last bid prior to the GONE post of the the three posts of GOING, GOING, GONE that Brock or Lance will post stating a few min before the cut off
Michael, Andy missed the last auction by a nano-second, he wanted that wood but lost it, so he realy wants to make sure he makes it this time round. |

I LOVE LOVE LOVE old hand planes, they honestly just don't make them like they used too (with the exception of Lie-Nelson) so this is a wonderful buy for me, I actually have 4 other old planes in a box waiting for me to restore them. They are from the early part of the last century and need some serious TLC, the old Stanley/Bailey No 7's are not easy to find anymore. I'm going to order a set of rosewood handles for it, re-flatten the sole and spend some quality time with it to get it back in perfect shape. I'll have to check the blade, if it's getting past it's sharpening age (you can only sharpen them so many times in 95 years ![]() -Paul- |
